DROUGHT INSURANCE
Doctor Mereu himself, as well as the villagers, are amazed at how effective the Water Filters are in cleaning the muddy water and the positive health benefits resulting from them. I witnessed how durable these Sawyer Filters are on my last trip to Maasai Land in late September 2016. The long rainy season was expected to begin then and Kenya did receive a few showers and downpours but it has not been enough to sustain the rural population.
What is needed now are rain barrels. Most villages have no water storage capabilities. Villagers may walk up to 4 hours one way just to get a few jerry cans worth of filthy water from a muddy watering hole. WHAT’S NEEDED RIGHT NOW ARE RAIN BARRELS! These barrels, actually 25 gallon plastic garbage cans, are used to siphon off rainwater from the roofs of village huts. Water can then be stored for immediate and future use. This water is much cleaner than what comes from streams or watering holes. It is easier to clean and therefore the filters last longer.
These rain barrels are quite expensive for the Maasai to buy considering the average Maasai momma may make $20 a month tops selling her bead-craft or locally grown vegetables at a local market. $22 buys 1 Rain Barrel plus a lid and will last a lifetime. We call that a GREAT INVESTMENT. A Rain Barrel is “DROUGHT INSURANCE.” It can be the difference between life and death during harsh times.

From now until the end of this year Clean Water Kenya will focus on raising funds for Rain Barrels. We have on hand a number of Filter Systems to help us provide the Maasai with clean water for the next year. We’re hoping to prepare them for the next rainy season coming up in April so they can stave off the harsh reality of drought they face on a daily basis. Please help as you can.
